A national Rapid Index survey finds Hon. Kalonzo Musyoka holds a moderate lead over Dr. Fred Matiang'i on overall suitability for the presidency, based on respondents' evaluation of the two leaders' historical records and professional achievements.
When voters are asked specifically about executive competence and reform delivery, however, Matiang'i significantly outperforms Musyoka — suggesting a split in voter priorities between political experience and coalition-building versus technocratic results and institutional reform.
| Candidate | National | Urban | Rural | Under 35 | 35+ | Central | Eastern | Rift Valley | Nyanza/Western |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kalonzo Musyoka | 48% | 44% | 51% | 46% | 50% | 32% | 72% | 41% | 38% |
| Fred Matiang'i | 39% | 52% | 31% | 55% | 32% | 61% | 18% | 48% | 49% |
Musyoka performs strongest in his traditional Eastern stronghold and among older, rural voters. Matiang'i leads among younger, urban and Central/Rift Valley respondents.
While Kalonzo Musyoka currently enjoys broader national recognition and a lead in head-to-head preference, Dr. Fred Matiang'i commands stronger support when voters focus purely on deliverables, reforms and executive competence.
The data suggests the eventual opposition candidate will likely be decided by coalition negotiations rather than raw popularity alone. 67% of respondents who expressed a view on pairings said a Musyoka–Matiang'i ticket, in either order, would be the strongest combination on offer.
